The Assassin’s Creed Movie: Disaster or breakthrough?

It’s going to take some time until the Assassin’s Creed movie hits the theaters. But now that we have our first trailer, we can take a first guess as to its qualities. The movie has a lot to live up to: There seems to be a curse on movies based on videogames and some think, that Assassin’s Creed is going to be the one movie, that is going to end the streak of bad movie adaptations.

Of course, it’s not easy to judge a movie based on its trailer. But still, you can take some pretty good guesses. First of all, it seems like the movie is sticking pretty closely to what we know from the videogames. All the major elements, like Abstergo, Assassins, medieval Europe, wall climbing and the combat are all present. Now, that doesn’t automatically make for an interesting movie, but it’s certainly an indication that the makers are familiar with the franchise. That’s not a huge surprise, since Ubisoft Motion Pictures produces the movie.

Second, it seems like the production valuer are quite high. Everything we see is visually impressive, the shots are done really nicely and nothing feels cheap. Since the movie seems to have a budget between 150-200 Million Dollars, the visuals are going to be the least of our worries. Having an actor like Michael Fassbender take over the lead is also a good sign. Ubisoft seems to be very confident in the movie too, since they already have greenlit a second movie.

Personally, I’m still a bit sceptical, even if this trailer gives us a good first impression. Sure, all the known elements are there, good actors are in place and the cinematography is up to the task, but it remains to be seen if it all comes together in one cohesive movie. I’d be happy if this would really end this long streak of bad videogame movies. Maybe, just maybe, this movie could turn it around and make videogame movies as big as comic book movies? What do you think?
